The Corps Network News, July 2007
From the President and CEO
I am pleased to share our new electronic newsletter with you, The Corps Network News. This newsletter is designed to keep you up-to-date on the amazing accomplishments of our nation’s Service and Conservation Corps. The Corps Network is a member association providing a national voice for Corps, building partnerships in support of the work of Corps and providing training and technical assistance to assure program quality.
A multi-year development process has resulted in more focused work within our organization and a name change from the National Association of Service and Conservation Corps (NASCC) to The Corps Network. Current initiatives include: National Evaluation of Youth Corps – the largest ever random assignment of national service programs; Civic Justice Corps – focused enrollment on formerly incarcerated and court involved youth/young adults; Public Lands Corps – engaging Corpsmembers on critical projects in our National Parks; Inclusive Crew Project – engaging youth with and without disabilities in service projects; and lots more…
With hurricane and wildfire seasons under way, this edition of The Corps Network News is focused on disaster preparedness, relief and recovery. Corps are actively engaged in minimizing potential impact of natural and man made disasters and providing disaster response and recovery assistance. Current national projects include RuralResponse, the Gulf Coast Recovery Corps and a soon to be established permanent Corps in Mississippi.

Corps have a long history of engagement in preparedness, relief, and recovery efforts including in response to earthquakes, floods, hurricanes and wildfires and they continue to respond to the devastation in the Gulf Coast Region. Corps respond to local incidents as well, including ice storms in southwestern Missouri and tornadoes in central Florida earlier this year. Multiple Corps in the Western United States actively participate in mitigating the potential impact of fires and supporting fire suppression. Members Corps such as the AmeriCorps*National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC), have focused almost entirely on disaster relief and prevention in recent years.
Service and Conservation Corps are an important component of disaster preparedness, relief, and recovery in the United States.
We invite you to join us in support of the work of Corps!
Best wishes,
Sally T. Prouty
President and CEO
