National Public Lands Day Corps Spotlight

National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy. In 2007, 110,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, planted trees and plants, and removed trash and invasive plants.

National Public Lands Day keeps the promise of the Civilian Conservation Corps, the "tree army" that worked from 1933-42 to preserve and protect America's natural heritage. On September 27, celebrate the 15th annual National Public Lands Day--

Host Your Own National Public Lands Day Event

On September 27, the Montana Conservation Corps (MCC) will host a group of 75-100 volunteers to complete a morning tree planting and trail building service project in celebration of National Public Lands Day and the 75th Anniversary of the Civilian Conservation Corps. Following the project, MCC will host a reception lunch, followed by a complementary tour of Lewis & Clark Caverns.

MCC has invited Senator Tester; Professor Harry Fritz from the University of Montana; and Stan Cohen, author of "The Tree Army: a pictorial history of the CCC" to speak on the history of the Civilian Conservation Corps. MCC will also be hosting an informal reunion/camp-out for CCC alumni with campfire reminiscences. CCC alumni are now in their 80’s and 90’s, and for those who can not make the trip to the Caverns, MCC is coordinating efforts to visit them in their homes.
